Last month, we talked about the importance and process of belonging. I want to share a little about some organizations and events that really demonstrate key aspects of belonging in action. I was fortunate to serve on a panel during the African Professionals Network (APNET) and a key theme of the panel was the power of representation in leadership, recognition to acknowledge excellence, and agency fostered by mentorship: all key aspects of belonging.
On November 15th, Empowering Spaces will host their second immersive experience- Cultivating Community: Coffee, Cuisine, and Culture. One purpose of the half-day immersion is to help foster authentic connection, encounters, and dialogue rooted in communal sharing. The belief is that genuine connection builds trust and empathy, allowing relationships to form across differences and ultimately build stronger, united communities.
As these two events and organizations demonstrate, belonging begins with agency and authentic encounters—when people have the power to shape their own stories and relationships, rather than being defined by others. These organizations demonstrate how true inclusion happens not through programs for communities, but by them and with them: when individuals can bring their full selves into spaces where their experiences are seen, valued, and trusted.
A third event and organization is Women Walking West and their upcoming RISE Gala. Recognition is a key aspect for fostering belonging- both public recognition and the recognition of one’s worth and skills when nobody is watching. Women Walking West centers recognition in all their work from the awards at the gala to the day-to-day work recognizing women’s potential and past educational and degree attainment to be leveraged in their new home here in the region.
All three of these events are led by community members and encourage authentic encounters—moments of genuine connection that cross lines of difference. These encounters allow people to be heard and to hear others, creating the mutual respect that anchors community. When we build spaces that honor agency and invite real dialogue, we move beyond symbolic gestures toward a deeper, shared sense of belonging.
I encourage you to engage with, learn from, and support these organizations working to create the conditions where belonging can truly take root and thrive. Reach out to learn more about them and other organizations in the region working to build stronger, inclusive communities. |
