This month, we reflect on the importance and process of belonging—the feeling of being seen, heard, and valued for who we are and what we bring to our communities. For immigrant and international residents, belonging goes beyond welcome; it is about having a voice, leadership opportunities, and the power to help shape the future of the region they now call home. It is important to ask what we are being asked to belong to, who determines when and how someone belongs, and how the process of belonging is established.

Belonging grows when immigrant and international voices are represented in decision-making, storytelling, and leadership. Across the Cincinnati region, we see inspiring examples of this leadership in action—from immigrant entrepreneurs revitalizing business corridors, to international students contributing to innovation and research, to community leaders guiding nonprofit boards and advocacy efforts. When immigrants lead, they bring global perspectives, cultural fluency, and firsthand understanding of the challenges newcomers face. Their voices ensure that policies, programs, and community initiatives reflect lived realities rather than assumptions.

Whether the focus is on community events, programs within a company, or storytelling at any scale, activities to enhance belonging must be authentic and developed in collaborative, inclusive ways. With any process, we must ask who determines and defines belonging: asking this question helps to build authentic, meaningful relationships, partnerships, and community.

Equally vital is the power of storytelling. When immigrants and refugees tell their own stories, grounded in lived experience and supported by data, they help the broader community understand both the human and economic impact of migration. They help to demonstrate how one’s story does not end with the migration journey and that they are here to give, to innovate, to create, and build with all of us collectively, so we all may thrive.

At Cincinnati Compass, we believe that authentic storytelling is at the heart of building belonging. By amplifying immigrant voices, highlighting leadership, and sharing data-driven narratives, we create space for understanding and collaboration.

Let’s commit to nurturing a sense of belonging for all. When every voice is valued and every story is heard, our region becomes not just more diverse but more connected, compassionate, and strong.
