“Immigrants come to the US to give, not to take,” were the words recently shared by a community leader at a City Council sub-committee meeting. We profoundly agree and remain deeply committed to our mission to advance economic and social inclusion of immigrant and refugee communities. As part of that mission, we are committed to creating a welcoming region where immigrants and refugees are safe and feel a sense of belonging and connection.

We recognize the invaluable contributions of immigrants and refugees to our shared prosperity and shared humanity. Immigrants bring with them not only diverse cultures and experiences but also drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth, enriching communities across the Cincinnati region and beyond. For the region to continue to grow, we must welcome immigrants, refugees, and international students to the region. We understand that there is a short-term investment that will lead to long-term benefits for the region as a whole.

In an inclusive economic landscape, immigrants and refugees are more than workers or job creators; they are key partners in building a future that benefits everyone. When we embrace inclusive economic policies, invest in immigrant-led businesses, create talent pipelines for international talent, and establish leadership opportunities, we foster a cycle of prosperity that uplifts entire communities, creating opportunities for growth, connection, and shared success.

We know there are challenges ahead, but we draw strength from the courageous, creative, and resilient leaders and organizations around the region who are committed to building a region where everyone participates in shared prosperity. Cincinnati Compass will continue to work for policies and practices that center the humanity and dignity of newcomers, that promote inclusive economic growth where everyone thrives, and that leverage the skills and talents of newcomers that grow our region’s economy and cultural vibrancy.

We call on you to join us. We are strong together.

· Share stories of success: Are you or do you know an entrepreneur adding vibrancy to a neighborhood business district; an international student who founded a company; a rising civic leader; or an employer who understands the value of hiring multilingual talent?

· Volunteer: Support Cincinnati Compass or one of our many partners through volunteering. Help a jobseeker connect to professional networks and gain career guidance. Mentor a small business. Help a newcomer connect to local communities and resources.

· Learn: We are happy to come to one of your meetings to share strategies for welcoming and supporting immigrant and refugee newcomers, connecting you to many providers across the region. We can help you make sense of the changing immigration landscape. Are you an employer? We can help you build your capacity to attract and retain multilingual talent.

· Donate: Make a contribution to help us expand our programs in areas of civic engagement (Compass Community Council), workforce development (employer engagement and support of internationally trained professionals) and small business development (entrepreneur roundtable).

DATA YOU CAN USE

  • More than half (55%) of US ‘unicorn’ businesses, startup companies valued at greater than 1 billion USD, have immigrant founders. Almost 80% of America’s unicorn companies have an immigrant founder or an immigrant in a key leadership role, such as CEO or vice president of engineering. The research shows the importance of immigrants in cutting-edge companies and the U.S. economy at a time when U.S. immigration policies have pushed talent to other countries. -- National Foundation for American Policy
